Untitled -18

five months into a war
has anyone changed —
their mind
their convictions
their matrix of
grief and outrage
their boundary —
except for the few
that depend on what
strangers think they give
freely: likes, applause, power?

we are screaming in
echo chambers
or saying nothing at all
or worse
speaking inanities
in carefully curated spaces
distant from war, distanced from war

meanwhile a child looks
skyward, most times in
fear, sometimes in hope —
there is a calculus somewhere
that thinks one cancels out
the other. It is the absurdity
of the English language
where gravity has two
meanings. One
that suggest that the
falling in itself may be of
grave concern. Grave.
Concern.

The other that insists
that what is falling must
fall. That, once set in
motion, there is
no other way.

  1. Yes, actually: in the U.S., surveys of likely Democratic voters have tracked growing numbers of people who support an immediate ceasefire and oppose their government supplying arms to Israel. Originally it was just younger activists who felt this way, but these survey results suggest that their activism has converted many, perhaps most, older Dems at this point.

    1. Thanks Dave. That is so good to hear. The young have been such a force everywhere – against war and climate change. They give us all hope. Here we see a lot of apathy which is just as hard to understand. And it’s not just war-fatigue.

I love your play on words!! Excellent write. I always appreciate your to-the-pointness. You somehow do it with gentleness.

I agree, it does feel as if we are talking into echo chambers. But you know, if you ever attend a march, you really feel the sense of community behind the call for change, which helps one continue to use their voice.

    1. Thanks so much. Am so in awe of how consistent and relentless people have been all over the world in trying to stop the war. I can feel that energy even in just the reels. What is baffling is the apathy I see elsewhere… Oh and I got the kindle version of Songs of Revolution… am going to start reading a few poems everyday!

  3. That child looking skyward will stay with me. May no bombs fall on him. May someone find a way to feed him. Sigh.
