Linked to Carpe Diem Haiku Kai, where Basho’s journey to the Deep North (Oku no Hosomichi) continues. From Sakata, Basho commences his return journey, travelling south along the coast, past the Nezu Barrier towards the barrier at Ichiburi. But the heat and humidity take a toll on his frail health and he is unable to write.

Very much in the spirit of Basho’s book there. I can imagine moments like the one you so evocatively describe in your 2nd haiku, where a haiku is needed, but…..

Thank you.. It’s quite incredible the way he has actually composed such perfect haiku to underline every step of his journey but even the master took years to edit and finesse his book!!
