swooping down through the mist
a question

I shed a bitter tear
see how sweet water
sinks in the brine

Linked to Carpe Diem Haiku Kai, where Basho’s journey to the Deep North (Oku no Hosomichi) continues. Leaving the Three Mountains of Dewa, Basho takes a river boat to Sakata, where the Mogami River enters the sea. From Sakata, he continues north to the misty, brooding Kisakata lagoon.
